These doctors have been appointed by HSE under the Ionising Radiation Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2017 (IRRNI17) to conduct annual examinations of classified workers. HSE provides guidance to these doctors on what is required at these examinations.

Routes to qualification

To become an Appointed Doctor under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017
the doctor must:
1) Hold current registration with the General Medical Council and a licence to practise
2) Hold as a minimum a Diploma in Occupational Medicine or equivalent
3) Hold a current training certificate in ionising radiation

Routes to recognition within the UK

Only doctors registered and licensed to practice by the UK GMC and meet the requirements specified by HSENI can be come appointed doctors under the ionising radiation regulations. Doctors who are applying to be appointed under regulations within Great Britain will need to contact the Health and Safety Executive.

Summary of routes

Hold current registration with the General Medical Council and a licence to practise Non-GB occupational medicine qualifications would be recognised if equivalent to the minimum of Diploma in Occupational Medicine. Non-GB ionising radiation training courses would be recognised if equivalent to those in GB.
