Regulation summary
The role of the AMED is to ensure commercial divers are fit to dive as required under the Diving at Work Regulations 1997. Only doctors approved by HSE are permitted to conduct this work.

To become an AMED under the Diving at Work Regulation 1997 the doctor must:
1) Hold current registration with the General Medical Council and a licence to practise
2) Hold as a minimum a Diploma in Occupational Medicine or equivalent
3) Hold a current training certificate in diving medicine
A doctor who wishes to become an approved medical examiners of divers under the diving at work regulations 1997 is not charged a fee for registration.

Only doctors registered and licensed to practice by the UK GMC and meet the requirements specified by HSE can be come approved under the Northern Ireland Diving at Work Regulations. Doctors who are applying to be appointed under regulations within Northern Ireland will need to contact the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland.

Non-GB occupational medicine qualifications would be recognised if equivalent to the minimum of Diploma in Occupational Medicine.
Non-GB diving medicine training certificate would be recognised if equivalent to those in GB
