Environmental Health is that area of public health activity which strives to improve, protect and maintain health and well being through action on the physical environment and life circumstances. The seven principal subjects within Environmental Health are : food safety, food standards, occupational health and safety, public health, waste management, built environment and pollution control.

Qualifications and experience

New professionals

Routes to qualification

An accredited BSc, BSc apprenticeship, or MSc followed by a period of work-based activity which is then assessed by CIEH.

Successful completion of all these elements leads to Registration as a Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner.

Recognition for professionals outside the UK
All - there are routes to recognition for professionals from all countries

CIEH or one of its accredited Universities will evaluate prior learning and experience on a case by case basis.


Registration

Registration requirements

Prior to 2022, Registration was with the Environmental Health Registration Board. CIEH has now taken ownership of the EHRB Registers and launched its own Registers of Environmental Health Practitioners, Chartered Environmental Health Practitioners, Food Safety Practitioners and Housing and Health Practitioners.
