Qualifications and experience
New professionals
- Routes to qualification

Professional Membership Entry (PME) is the standard route to obtaining chartered status. It is available only to Associate members of the Institute of Chartered Foresters. PME is a six-step assessment process involving:
> Production of a two-year Work Record demonstrating professional competency
> Production of a two-year CPD Record, demonstrating a commitment to personal and professional development
> Submission of a Career Profile (extended CV)
> Submission of a Critical Analysis (3,000 – 3,500 word written work)
> Completion of a Professionalism & Ethics E-Learning module
> Attendance at a Professional InterviewEligibility for PME is assessed using a points-based system, where applicants must have obtained 10 qualifying points before they can present. Points are awarded to a combination of academic qualifications and relevant professional experience.

The Institute of Chartered Foresters is the only Royal Chartered body for foresters and arboriculturists in the UK. All members of the Institute are required to uphold the integrity and reputation of the profession of forestry and arboriculture and to safeguard the public interest in matters of health and safety and otherwise and are bound by the Code of Conduct.
