Regulation summary
Infrastructure engineers help shape and build the modern world, working alongside civil engineers to develop and maintain transport networks, provide clean water and sanitation, protect us from floods, design and build large structures and buildings, and enable energy supplies. The Institution of Civil Engineers is the professional home for civil engineers and infrastructure engineers. It is governed by Royal Charter and is regulated by the Engineering Council.

Protected titles
Infrastructure engineers who achieve professionally qualified membership with ICE and Chartered Engineer registration can use the postnominals CEng MICE. In addition, if they if qualify directly with ICE via a professional review, they may also use the protected title Chartered Infrastructure Engineer.

Qualifications and experience
New professionals

There is a three-stage process to achieve professional qualification as an infrastructure engineer.
1. The award of recognised academic qualification(s), or equivalent, to demonstrate the required underpinning knowledge and understanding
2. Successfully completing a period of supervised training, referred to as initial professional development (IPD)
3. Passing a Professional Review based on an assessment of documentary evidence and an interview.
Professionals from outside the UK

- Some - qualifications from some countries may be recognised, but professionals from other countries will have to re-qualify

The title Chartered Infrastructure Engineer is restricted to professionals who have passed a Professional Review with ICE.
ICE can offer exemptions from academic and/or initial professional development checks for those qualified with the following bodies or states:
- Hong Kong Institution of Engineers
- Engineering New Zealand
- Engineers Ireland
- Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)
- Ordem dos Engenheiros, Portugal
- Switzerland
- EEA member states with equivalent protected or regulated titles
- The US State of Idaho
- International Professional Engineer (IntPE)ICE also recognises academic qualifications registered with FEANI in Europe and under the International Engineering Alliance Accords.
