A Chartered Legal Executive is an authorised lawyer, who often specialises in an area of law. They can carry out reserved legal work, under the supervision of an authorised person such as a solicitor or CILEX Practitioner.

A Chartered Legal Executive is a Fellow of the Chartered organisation, and is subject to annual continuing professional development requirements and conduct checks.

They are regulated by CILEx Regulation, which is the independent regulatory body.

Qualifications and experience

New professionals

Routes to qualification

You must have:
- completed approved qualifications and
- at least 3 years qualifying employment experience
prior to applying to be admitted as a Chartered Legal Executive.

The application for admission requires individuals to complete a portfolio of log sheets and evidence to demonstrate that they meet the competencies that define a Chartered Legal Executive.

Routes to recognition within the UK

The recognition of Chartered Legal Executives and all relevant qualifications operate within the jurisdiction of England and Wales.

There is currently no route for legal professionals within the UK, but outside of England and Wales, to be authorised as a Chartered Legal Executive or CILEX Practitioner.

Such legal professionals need to requalify under the 'route to qualification for new professionals' detailed above.
