Regulation
Regulation summary
Management accounting combines accounting, finance and management with the leading edge techniques needed to drive successful businesses. CIMA members advise on the financial implications of projects, explain the financial consequences of business decisions, formulate business strategy, monitor spending and financial control, conduct internal business audits, explain the impact of the competitive landscape, and bring a high level of professionalism and integrity to business. CIMA members work across the organisation, not just in finance. They analyse information for making business decisions, formulate business strategy to create wealth and shareholder value, identify and manage risk, apply accounting techniques to plan and budget, and determine what information management needs and explain this to non-financial managers. CIMA members are required to comply with the CIMA code of ethics and are at the heart of business as its conscience, adding judgement, independence and objectivity.

Studying for the CGMA Professional Qualification with CIMA is open to everyone, no matter what qualifications or professional experience you begin with.
The syllabus comprises three levels of achievement. You will start at the Operational level and move on to Management before culminating at the Strategic level. You will study nine subjects from three areas of knowledge: Enterprise, Performance and Financial. To earn the CGMA Professional Qualification, you will need to complete all three levels — the average student takes around four years — and have three years of relevant practical experience.
School leavers can choose between the CGMA Certificate in Business Accounting or a CIMA Apprenticeship (if they live in England).
Undergraduates can start studying for the CGMA Professional Qualification as part of their degrees or undertake courses which are part of the CIMA registered student programme.
Graduates in any discipline can also study for CIMA, but graduates in relevant disciplines, such as accounting or finance, may benefit from exemptions from some of CIMA’s CGMA Exams.
Finally postgraduates with a relevant master’s degree in accounting, finance or an MBA (Accounting Major) may be eligible for accelerated entry routes, allowing them to start higher up within the CGMA Professional Qualification at the Management Level.
