The Chartered Mathematics Teacher designation (postnominals CMathTeach) reflects the balance between teaching skills (pedagogy) and mathematics knowledge that is necessary for a professional teacher to educate and inspire today’s students.

CMathTeach designation is incorporated within the Royal Charter of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) and is awarded by the Chartered Mathematics Teacher Registration Authority. The Authority is composed of representatives from the following organisations:
• Association of Teachers of Mathematics;
• IMA;
• Mathematical Association; and
• National Association for Numeracy and Mathematics in Colleges.

Routes to qualification

Chartered Mathematics Teacher designation is a masters level designation awarded to mathematics teachers who can demonstrate:
• FHEQ level 7 qualification in Education (or equivalent professional competency and knowledge);
• FHEQ level 6 qualification with 50% mathematics (or equivalent professional competency and knowledge);
• suitable level and length of teaching mathematics; and
• a commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Chartered Mathematics Teacher registration is open to anyone who can demonstrate that they meet the criteria. There are 'or equivalent' routes for applicants who hold different level qualifications.

To apply for the CMathTeach designation individuals must be a member of at least one of the organisations in the Registration Authority and satisfy the requirements in the following four areas:
• Pedagogy
• Mathematics
• Experience
• Continuing Professional Development.

Registration is subject to annual renewal and continued professional development participation.
