Qualifications and experience

New professionals

Routes to qualification

Engineers who wish to register as a Chartered Structural Engineer must satisfy three requirements:
1. You must satisfy the Institution's academic requirements set at an accredited MEng degree (or equivalent)
2. You must undertake a period of training (referred to as Initial Professional Development) and pass a Professional Review Interview based on that experience (or equivalent)
3. You must pass the Institution's Chartered Membership Examination (or equivalent)

Professionals from outside the UK

Some - qualifications from some countries may be recognised, but professionals from other countries will have to re-qualify
Summary of routes

1. Your academic qualifications, which you achieved outside the UK may be recognised through an international agreement such as the Washington Accord or European Engineering Education Database - check with the Membership Department.
2. The Institution has exemption agreements with some engineering institutions that may provide exemption from the Professional Review Interview - check with the Membership Department
3. The Institution has exemption agreements with some engineering institutions that may provide exemption from some elements of the Chartered Membership Exam - check with the Membership Department

Registration

Registration requirements

Once you have satisfied the different requirements as set out in the qualifications section you will be elected as a Chartered Structural Engineer and will be eligible to use the appropriate professional designation e.g. MIStructE.

You will be required to abide by the Institution's Code of Conduct and undertake CPD on an annual basis. You will also be required to pay an annual subscription fee to maintain your membership.

You may also choose to register with the Engineering Council to use the CEng designation.
