Routes to qualification

To qualify for Chartered membership you will need an Honour's degree (or equivalent). You will also need a sufficient amount of industry experience. There is no defined minimum amount of time over which this can be attained, but typically professionals with less than five years' experience are unlikely to have attained the necessary levels of experience. Using the experience that you have accumulated throughout your career you will need to demonstrate 14 mandatory competences.

In addition to holding exemplifying qualifications to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding elements of professional competence, there are other ways you can demonstrate the necessary knowledge and understanding for progression to chartership. The C.WEM Work Based Learning Route provides a means of enabling very experienced applicants who lack the exemplifying academic qualifications to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding which they have acquired through their working experience.

When you apply for membership at CIWEM, providing you are applying for the appropriate membership grade and have the appropriate academic qualifications and experience, you also can register for additional professional registrations with the Engineering Council, the Society for the Environment, and the Science Council. This can be done in the same application.

An application fee is payable upon submission for non-members.

All Chartered members are required to keep a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) record. The minimum amount of CPD activity required by CIWEM is ninety hours, over a three year rolling period. This flexible approach means that a member’s CPD can take account of how they work, and they can plan their CPD activities to address their changing needs. In addition to factual details, such as time spent and content of specific activities, CPD records must also contain planning and objectives together with constructive assessment and reflection of the personal professional development benefits gained from each activity, this should include details of how the CPD benefits the quality of an individuals practice and the users of their work. An annual CPD audit takes place annually. Each year, a randomly selected sample of professionally active members are contact via email and requested to submit their CPD records.

CIWEM’s subscription year runs from January to December. In accordance with CIWEM Regulations membership subscription are due for payment by the 01 January annually.
