A CILEX Practitioner can practise without supervision in a regulated firm in areas of practice that are designated as Reserved or Regulated Activities.

CILEX Practitioners are authorised persons and are subject to annual continuing professional development and conduct checks.

Qualifications and experience

New professionals

Routes to qualification

You must have 5 years legal sector experience with at least 2 years immediately preceding an application in the required area of practice.

For litigation (civil. criminal or family) or immigration (a regulated activity), you will first need to become a Chartered Legal Executive.

You will need to submit:
- proof of relevant qualifications
- portfolios and logbooks as evidence from their caseloads.

Some - qualifications from some countries may be recognised, but professionals from other countries will have to re-qualify
Summary of routes

If you are a lawyer who has qualified in the EU/EEA (including Irish qualified professionals) or Switzerland, you may apply to be authorised as a Chartered Legal Executive or CILEX Practitioner through our process for the mutual recognition of professional qualifications (MRPQ).

Other overseas professionals need to requalify under the 'route to qualification for new professionals' detailed above.

Registration requirements

For conduct of litigation and immigration, you need to register with the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives to become a Chartered Legal Executive.
Annually you must complete a declaration related to conduct and pay a fee.
