Regulation summary

A certificated flight instructor (CFI) is a pilot who has been trained by an instructor specifically on how to teach people to learn to fly.

Regulation:
Applicants for an FIE certificate for aeroplanes shall:
• Hold the relevant instructor certificate, as applicable
• Have completed at least 2,000 hours of flight time as a pilot on aeroplanes or TMGs
• Have completed at least 100 hours of flight time instructing applicants for an instructor certificate
• Be qualified to act as pilot in command on the aircraft during a skill test, proficiency check or assessment of competence when conducted on the aircraft
• Demonstrate relevant knowledge, background and appropriate experience related to the privileges of an examiner
• Have not been subject to any sanctions, including the suspension, limitation or revocation of any of their licences, ratings or certificates issued in accordance with this Part, for non-compliance with the EASA Basic Regulation and its Implementing Rules during the last 3 years. (When evaluating the applicant's background, the UK CAA will evaluate the personality and character of the applicant, and his/her cooperation with the UK CAA and may also take into account whether the applicant has been convicted of any relevant criminal or other offenses, taking into account national law and principles of non-discrimination).

You will be required to attend an examiner standardisation course provided by the UK CAA or at an Approved Training Organisation (ATO) approved by the UK CAA to conduct the specific examiner standardisation course.
Applicants must have approval granted by the UK CAA before commencing any course of examiner standardisation training.

The privileges of an FIE certificate allows an examiner to carry out the following privileges for single-pilot aeroplanes or helicopters:
• Conduct assessments of competence (AoC) for the issue, revalidation or renewal of certificates for FI, CRI, IRI and TRI, provided the relevant instructor rating is valid
