Regulation summary
Offshore medics possess core skills allied to medicine or nursing to enable them to treat workers who are ill or injured offshore as required by The Offshore Installations and Pipeline Works (First-Aid) Regulations 1989
HSE is the body responsible for setting the training standards of Offshore Medics through a syllabus and the approval of training providers.
There are no fees chargeable by HSE to become an Offshore Medic however, individuals or their employers are required to pay for their own initial and/or requalification training .

Offshore medics in GB are individuals who are either:
1) Experienced nurses who are currently registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
2) Experienced paramedics who are currently registered with the Health and Care Professions Council
3) Military medics who have underpinning core skills allied to nursing and medicine
Such individuals must then successfully complete a recognised offshore medic training course. This training is required to be renewed every three years to demonstrate a maintenance of competence and must be provided by an HSE approved offshore medic training provider.

Within the United Kingdom only those individuals who have satisfactorily completed a course of offshore medic training delivered by an HSE approved offshore medic training organisation and have been appointed by an employer under the offshore installations and pipeline works regulations (first aid) 1989 to act as an offshore medic can act in that role. The individual should demonstrate to HSE that they have current equivalent skills and competencies as someone trained in GB.
To act as an offshore medic on the basis of nursing experience then the individual must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

For those who wish to act as offshore medics and are reliant on their training for example as a nurse they must first be registered within the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and secondly demonstrate they hold all the current competencies expected of a UK qualified Offshore medic. For others not linked to the NMC they will need to demonstrate they hold current competencies in all aspects of training that a UK qualified Offshore Medic is expected to hold and that this training has been delivered by a competent provider.
